Clary Gardens Volunteer Program Work Session
Volunteer Work Sessions are scheduled at Clary Gardens, 588 W. Chestnut Street, Coshocton from 8:30am to 10am on May 26th, June 23rd (tentative – depending on the roses), September 1st and 29th, and October 13th. Volunteers are needed to help transform the garden into an inspiring, relaxing and educational landscape. No experience is required. Help is also needed throughout the year with workshops, weddings and other special events. Volunteers may help at any or all of the sessions. Register Early for Discount on Grantwriting and Social Media Strategies Workshops
Workshops to teach non-profit organizations and community groups the keys to success for grant writing and social media strategies will be held at the Dennison Depot on Thursday, May 24th from 9am to noon and 1pm to 3pm. The morning session will cover the complete process of preparing and writing grants from beginning to end, teaching proven tips that work. New Philadelphia Rotarians Invite Residents to Salute Freedom
New Philadelphia residents can express patriotism and love of the country this year by joining the Salute Freedom Flag Program. For just $25 members of the New Philadelphia Rotary Club will place an American flag in your yard several days prior to five major American holidays and take it down for storage until the next holiday. Flags will be placed for Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Veterans Day. The high-quality Ohio-made embroidered American flag is mounted to a ten-foot metal flag pole. Each flag installation includes a PVC pipe holder driven flush into the ground. It remains in place between holiday periods when the flags are removed. Rotarians will install the pipe in the ground, then place and remove the flags and store them in a dry and secure area between holiday display times. Cancer Prevention Study Enrollment in Columbia County
If you are between the ages of 30 and 65 years old and have never been diagnosed with cancer, and are willing to make a long-term commitment to the study which involves completing follow-up surveys periodically over the next 20-30 years, ACS needs you. Brush up on your driving skills at the AARP Driver Safety Class at Union Hospital on Friday, May 18th from 10am to 3pm. The course will cover the rules of the road, safety tips to accommodate age- and weather-related changes that affect driving in mature adults, defensive driving techniques, the effects of medication on driving, and how to monitor driving skills. A new Youth Shooting Sports Summer Camp for those ages 9-13 will be held at 4-H Camp Piedmont on June 8th – 10th. Nominations for 2012 Ohio Agriculture Women of the Year Awards
Applications are being accepted through Thursday, May 31st for Ohio Agriculture Women of the Year Awards. Nominees must be at least 25 years old, be a current Ohio resident and have resided in the state for a minimum of ten cumulative years, be active in agriculture with at least five years’ experience, served her community in some professional and or civic capacity, and made some unique or outstanding contribution to the agriculture industry. Vendors for Coshocton Hot Air Balloon Festival
Applications are now being accepted for gift and craft vendors for the 31st annual Coshocton Hot Air Balloon Festival to be held June 8th – 10th at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds. Craft and gift vendor spaces are available for $50 (10'x10') and $80 (20'x10'). Fees must be received by Thursday, May 31st. All fees are non-refundable after that time. Only one vendor is permitted per assigned space, and you must provide your own tables, table covering, extension cords (absolutely no power strips), and inclement weather covering. All items must be appropriate for the family-oriented event. No flea-market items will be accepted. Cancer Ribbon Demolition Derby Fundraiser
The King of the Ring Demolition Derby will be held at the Carrollton County Fairgrounds on Saturday, October 6th at 6:30pm. You can purchase a $5 ribbon with the name of a cancer survivor or victim’s name on it and have it placed on a special entry in the Pro Class Division. All ribbons will be proudly displayed on the car during the event, and all proceeds from the ribbon sales will be donated for cancer research. Documentary to Raise Awareness of Zoar Dilemma
The village of Zoar is faced with a failing levee and residents fear that there are essentially three courses of action being considered: Fix the levee, at an estimated cost of $100 million, move the village out of harm’s way, or destroy the village following purchase of it by the federal government. The final decision may be one of these options or a combination of several alternatives. A documentary entitled Zoar Levee: To Preserve and Protect which investigates the levee dilemma and how community members and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are addressing it has been made.
