Fatal Crash Near Millersburg Under Investigation

A Friday evening crash has claimed the life of a Mt. Eaton man.

Officials with the Holmes County Sheriff’s office say that 21-year-old Tanner C. Stokovich of Mt. Eaton was traveling along SR 83 around 7:30 Friday evening when witnesses say he attempted to pass another vehicle. It was at this time that reports say Stokovich lost control of the vehicle, went off the left side of the roadway, and struck a barn just one-half mile north of Millersburg.

The impact of the crash produced severe damage to the barn’s foundation, requiring rescuers to crib up the barn’s upper structure before they were able to remove the victims and the vehicle.

Stokovich was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger in the vehicle, 20-year-old Thomas M. Wilson of Millersburg, was taken to Pomerene Hospital in Millersburg and later transported to Aultman Hospital in Canton.

Officials say both rainy weather conditions and speed are being considered as factors in the crash. In addition, the portion of SR 83 where Stokovich attempted to pass was marked as a no-passing zone. Deputies are expected to await toxicology reports before determining whether drugs or alcohol were factors as well.

Holmes Fire District #1 personnel were assisted at the scene by crews from Prairie Township, East Holmes, Killbuck Township, and the Western Holmes Fire Districts.
