The county sheriff’s office will have one uniformed deputy sheriff patrolling school grounds and buildings in addition to completing other law enforcement functions during regular school hours.
Superintendent David Janofa says last December’s shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut were a factor in the decision to place a resource officer on school property.
Janofa says the county will provide the department cruiser but it will be the school district’s responsibility to maintain it.
Janofa says the agreement with the county for a resource officer is in effect through June 30th.
Janofa says all deputies used for this service will have the authority to arrest people if necessary.
