Well Explosion Claims One, Investigation Continues

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of a fatal gas well explosion.

Spokesman Shane Cartmill says the blast occurred Monday morning along State Route 212 just south of Bolivar and remains undetermined.

Cartmill says investigators are currently focused on an area adjacent to the well.

Bolivar Fire Lieutenant Patrick Eddy says the call initially came in as a natural gas odor investigation.

Eddy says the explosion sparked a blaze and several grass fires that firefighters were able to quickly extinguish.

The victim’s name is not being released until the identity is confirmed with medical certainty.

According to information received from the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office, the deceased is believed to be an employee of the well company and the actions of the deceased are also being considered as a possible cause for the explosion.
