Mary Alice Reporting: As we head into the final days for Christmas shopping, AAA East Central recommends drivers remain alert in parking lots.

In a report, the National Safety Council found that 9% of pedestrian deaths in parking lots were due to backup incidents.

Not only should motorists slow down, but AAA Spokesperson Jim Garrity also says drivers should be aware of their surroundings with other vehicles and pedestrians by not being on a cell phone.

AAA recommends pulling through a parking space if available or backing into a space, making it easier to pull out. Collisions can also be avoided by choosing a parking space away from the entrance.

National Safety Council found that 59% of teens and 53% of adults were more likely to engage in personal grooming with in parking lots when driving.
