Mary Alice Reporting – A study from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety shows an increase of the time drivers spend behind the wheel.

The data indicates that, throughout one year, Americans spent 70 billion hours in a vehicle, which equals out to an extra 20 minute per week.

AAA Spokesperson Jim Garrity points out that with more time in the vehicle, motorists need to think about safety, such as the increased risk of being involved in an accident.

“That could be drowsy driving, distracted driving, road rage, and any other number of things. Anyone who’s spending more time in a vehicle, especially on a longer trip, is spending the appropriate amount of time off the road.”

The survey also noted that those who are married or live with a partner spend 12% more time driving.

The American Driving Survey discovered that U.S. drivers are behind the wheel almost an hour every day and will travel roughly 31.5 miles, a 5% increase between the 2014 and 2017 reporting period.
