Buckeyes Throttle Sparty, Take Sole Possession of Big Ten East

(Columbus, Ohio) – With Ohio State’s playoff hopes for 2017 seemingly gone, they were still alive for a Big Ten championship going into Saturday’s contest with #12 Michigan State.

The 13th ranked Buckeyes came out of the gates fast, something they have not done the past two weeks. Mike Weber had a 47 yard touchdown burst up the middle after the Spartans opening drive stalled. Quarterback J.T. Barrett capped off the opening quarter with a score from 4 yards out. That put his team up 14-0 after an 11 play, 73 yard drive.

MSU started the 2nd quarter punting out of their own end-zone, which set Ohio State up with great field position and a quick score. Barrett punched it in from inside the 5 yard line for what was his second rushing touchdown. With a three score lead, the Buckeyes’ defensive unit then played fast and free. Tyquan Lewis forced a fumble from QB Brian Lewerke, it was recovered by teammate Damon Arnette, and it set the home team up for another quick score. An 8 yard touchdown pass from Barrett to running back J.K. Dobbins made it 28-0. The other back claimed his second rushing touchdown of the day as Weber out ran everyone on the field for an 82 yard score.

A Spartans field goal on the final play of the first half made it 35-3 heading into the 3rd quarter. The Buckeyes, however, would continue to add to their lead right away on a 48 yard pass and catch from Barrett to Binjimen Victor. Ohio State then cruised the rest of the way to a 48-3 victory, claiming sole possession of the Big Ten East with two games remaining.
