Bertha Ann Barcus, 86, of New Philadelphia, passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2023, at the Community Hospice Truman House in New Philadelphia, after a long period of declining health. Born April 2, 1937 in Barnhill, she was the last surviving child of eight born to the late John and Blanche (Feister) Hunter.

Bertha was a lifelong area resident who had been a nurses’ aide at Union Hospital in Dover and in home healthcare, in addition to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker. She loved planting and tending to her flower beds around her home and enjoyed eating out with her girlfriends with whom she had worked at Union Hospital. Most of all, Bertha cherished the time that she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandson.

Wed on October 7, 1955, Bertha was blessed with a loving marriage to William H. Barcus who preceded her in death on September 19, 1988. They are survived by their children, Rhonda Menefee, Susan (Felix) Scopel, and Greg Barcus; grandchildren, Heather Donehue, Nikita Johnson, Nick Barcus, Carissa Thurman, and Jennifer Hall; great-grandchildren, William “J.J.”, Ashle y, Gracelyn, Abby, and Kenny; great-great-grandson, Oliver; and many nieces and nephews. Bertha also leaves behind her dear feline companion, Willow. In addition to her parents, husband, and siblings, she is preceded in death by a son, Ronald Barcus, and grandson, Brian and Johnathan Menefee.

According to Bertha’s wishes, a private, family graveside service will be held at Evergreen Burial Park in New Philadelphia where she will be interred beside her beloved husband. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice, 716 Commercial Ave. S.W., New Philadelphia, OH  44663.
