Mary Alice Reporting – A separate case pending for a Newcomerstown shooting suspect will now go to a jury trial.

Douglas Casteel is facing two charges, having weapons while under disability and improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle, in Judge Elizabeth Thomakos courtroom.

Tuscarawas County Prosecutor Mike Ernest says these charges relate to a spring 2018 incident and notes that a Wednesday plea change was anticipated.

“That had been part of a package resolution involving another case before Judge O’Farrell and we were informed that Mr. Casteel is no longer interested in resolving the case before Judge Thomakos.”

Ernest explains that the planned resolution created a combined deal that the prison time would be connected to another pending case before Judge Edward O’Farrell.

“However, it is anticipated that there is going to be some possible reconsideration by Mr. Casteel of resolving [this other case]. We don’t know that for sure.”

The other case, also from 2018, relates to Casteel being part of a drug robbery turned shooting incident in Newcomerstown.
