Mary Alice Reporting:
A 1% countywide tax renewal will be up for vote in the primary election.
Tuscarawas County Commissioner Chris Abbuhl said the tax make up around 57% of the monies in the General Fund.
“We think that voters will see that we are frugal with the county tax dollars and that we’ll get rewarded for that, because we can present the information. We can show exactly how it comes in, where it comes from, and where it’s spent on.”
He stressed that this is not a new tax, and will again be for 10 years.
He added the county is always trying to lessen cost burdens, since the money generated provides funding for multiple county departments.
“We try to alleviate the pressures on the General Fund by going after grant dollars as often as we can, and we’ve been very successful at that on a number of things because there’s always going to be an opportunity, and if we don’t try for the opportunity we’ll not get those grant dollars.”
Abbuhl said the county will face many challenges in the future and funding is necessary.
