Donald E. Baker, 81, of New Philadelphia, passed away on Sunday, April 8, 2018, at Union Hospital in Dover, after a period of declining health. Born November 12, 1936 at Station 15 in Harrison Co., Ohio, he was a son of the late Donald C. “Punch” and Helen E. (Boyer) Baker.
Don was a lifelong area resident and a 1954 graduate of Gnadenhutten High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959, during which time he developed a deep bond with four of his fellow servicemen whose friendship he enjoyed for the rest of his life. Don worked for several area companies and retired from Gradall in 1998. An avid sports fan, he loved watching NASCAR and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
His surviving family includes his daughter, Jami (Ken) Morrison; son, Christopher (Jenny) Baker; grandchildren, Zackary (fiancée, Christine Davis) Daley, Cameron Baker, Samantha Baker, Brent (Jenny) Morrison and Amy (Jeremy) Compton; 4 great-grandchildren; brother, James (Janice) Baker; sister-in-law, Mary Alice Baker; several nieces and nephews; and the mother of his children, Janeen Baker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Robert “Bob” Baker, and nieces, Lori Davis and Kelli Bonamico.
In keeping with Don’s wishes, cremation is planned. A private, family graveside service will be held in Evergreen Burial Park in New Philadelphia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice.
