Two vacant, run-down houses scheduled for demolition in Dover are one step closer to being removed.

The city of Dover has made the decision to remove the houses that have been unoccupied for some time now.

The homes for demolition are located at 529 Shawnee Dr. and 218 West 12th Street.

In a recent city council meeting, Dover Service Director Dave Douglas asked council for a committee assignment for the house removal.

Council referred the matter to the service department, and Douglas says the homes in question need to be removed due to their condition.

“The biggest reason is health and safety, but also the blighting of neighborhoods. We do try very hard to keep the neighborhoods in decent shape. We’ve got wonderful neighborhoods and we want to keep them that way.”

He states that Jeff Beitzel, building administrator, has done a great job at trying to contact owners regarding these homes, but the process will take some time.

“Like I’ve said, it’ll still be a long process. This is not over yet. It’s just something we brought for committee assignment, and we’ll discuss it at [our] committee [meeting], and it will take some time.”

Douglass says that they have not yet determined a start date for demolition and will discuss further if the lots will be put up for sale.
