Ede Willoughby – November 23, 2017

Ede Willoughby, 94, of Sunbury, formerly of Gnadenhutten, passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2017, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus. Born July 31, 1923 in Dennison, she was a daughter of the late Lorenzo and Francesca (Rinaldi) Gastaldo.

Ede was a 1943 graduate of Dennison High School who had also studied in Italy from 1930 to 1934. She was a longtime telephone operator who worked at Ohio Bell in Uhrichsville for 13 years before spending 17 employed by GTE in New Philadelphia until her retirement in 1984. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved spending time with her grandchildren, as well as sewing and traveling to Florida. She was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Church in Dennison.

On May 17, 1952, Ede married Richard Willoughby with whom she enjoyed nearly 49 years of marriage until his passing on April 7, 2001. They are survived by their children, Jeffrey (Patricia) Willoughby, Timothy (Ann) Willoughby, Lori (Larry) Huggins and Richard (Judy) Willoughby; and grandchildren, Jennifer (Jon) Hyland, Matthew, Cole and Adam Willoughby, Samantha and Kara Huggins, and Christine, Isaac and Grace Willoughby. Ede is also survived by her brother, Adolph (Roberta) Gastaldo; sisters- and brother-in-law, Elinda Gastaldo, Gloria Gastaldo, Patricia Ludwig, Shelby Willoughby and Jerry Willoughby; numerous nieces and nephews; and a number of relatives in Italy. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Linda Marie Willoughby; brothers, Armando, Corrado and Vincenzo Gastaldo; and sisters- and brothers-in-law, Phyllis Gastaldo, Fran Gastaldo, Andy Ludwig, Bill and Waneta Willoughby, Doyle and Ana Willoughby, and Eugene Willoughby.

Father Tyron Tomson will celebrate the funeral Mass on Monday, December 4, at 10:00 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery near Dennison. In keeping with Ede’s wishes, no visitation is planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Immaculate Conception Church’s Memorial Book Fund.
