Ernest “Ernie” Raber, age 91, of Sugarcreek, passed away Sunday, December 30, 2018 at Sycamore Run in Millersburg where he spent the last four months of his life.

He was born April 9, 1927 in Sugarcreek, as the youngest of four children born to Ernest and Trasie Raber.

He was one of the first workers MCC sent to Korea after the war to help coordinate relief efforts there. While there, he met and married Mary Mitchell on Oct. 7, 1953 who was also serving there.  While in Korea, they had two sons, and after their return to the states, three more sons completed their family.

Surviving are sons, Chris (Carolyn) of Chambersburg, PA, Eric (An) of Millersburg, Mark (Linda) of Wooster and Philip (Myriam) of Kidron; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and sister, Gladys Nelson of Fort Collins, Co. His wife, Mary, son Timothy, and brothers Blaine and Eugene preceded Ernie in their deaths.

Ernie’s career was teaching and coaching and will be fondly remembered by those his life touched. He enjoyed cheering on Cleveland sports teams. He and his dog, Pogo, will be missed by many tourists and people he encountered on his many walks and time spent sitting downtown.  The most important thing in Ernie’s life was his passion to follow Christ and his family is grateful for the heritage he provided.
