Mary Alice Reporting –

A Monday afternoon fire caused a loss of about 32 chicks and a shed that housed outdoor lawn care equipment.

Dover Fire Department responded, at 2:37pm, to 6239 Columbia Road and found the 20 by 30 foot detached garage, with an attached chicken coop, fully involved.

Captain Brooks Ross says that they had the fire out within 15 minutes.

“While we were in route, you could see a pretty big column of black smoke and up on a very steep driveway, right off of Columbia Road. We were actually only able to get one fire truck up the driveway.”

The other units stayed below and pumped-up water.

Ross explains the rainy weather prevented the blaze from spreading to any vegetation and there were no other buildings nearby.

No one was injured and the cause is attributed to a heat lamp and straw.

“Were pretty confident that that was the cause of the fire. Some of the straw got too close to the heat lamps and caught the attached chicken coop on fire which then transferred into the garage its self.”

The adult chickens escaped but the chicks did not. The building is a total loss.
