Grant Helps to Make Towpath Trail Connection

<p>Mary Alice Reporting:

(Thursday, November 8th) Tuscarawas County, Ohio – The Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail receives a grant to continue the development of a trail connection.

This project in the Village of Bolivar will create a walking and hiking trial link between Tuscarawas and Stark Counties.

Canalway Coalition President and Chief Executive Officer Dan Rice explains that they were awarded almost $400,000 from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Clean Ohio Fund.

“The money will actually be used to build the trail. Need to get under an active railroad crossing and build a boardwalk, and it has a couple of bends and curves in this section.”

The total budget for the project to connect the McDonnell Trailhead with Bolivar is just over $507,000, and the coalition is working to raising the remaining funds.

“This is a key linkage. This will now make it a safe connection all the way from Zoarville to Cleveland, a distance of about 88 miles.”

Work also continues south in Dover through Dennison to develop a connecting trail system.
