Nick McWilliams reporting – The Tuscarawas County Commissioners designated a local group as the primary travel agency for the area.
Horizons of Tuscarawas and Carroll Counties provides rural transportation to all residents of the area.
Tracey DeMattio from Horizons says that while the service is often thought of for use with the elderly or disabled, all are welcome to use their transportation.
“It’s to get people in our county wherever they need to go that cannot drive, or they don’t have vehicles to get around. It’s not only for the disabled. It’s for anyone that is a resident of Tuscarawas County.”
Through the designation, Horizons will receive funds from the federal and state level to offset operating expenses.
Commissioner Al Landis thanked Horizons for their daily work in moving county residents.
“Thank you for your diligence. There’s a lot of paperwork involved in order to move people. You have to move a lot of paper before you move people, and you do them both very well. So, thank you very much for what you do.”
Earlier this year, the commissioners rode a Horizons bus as part of a showcase of public transit in the area.
Up to 50 percent of Horizons operating expenses will be paid through the program.
