Michele Spring Reporting:

(Monday, October 08, 2018) New Philadelphia, Ohio – October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and it could be the perfect opportunity to help homeless animals in local shelters. The Tuscarawas County Humane Society has a variety of options for residents to support the local shelter.

Administrative Assistant Alyssa Lane says currently the shelter has 45 dogs in the shelter.

“We have a very high turnover here. So, a dog could be brought in and be adopted out just within a couple days. We typically do not see a dog stay here past 100 days.”

If residents are interested in adopting a dog or cat, they are encouraged to visit the Humane Society website to begin the application process. The process can take up to anywhere from 12 to 48 hours for approval.

Lane said residents can also help the shelter by donating items for the animals such as food, blankets, and pillows; however, donating your time might be the most rewarding donation of them all.

“A lot of what we do here is volunteer driven. Unfortunately, we are limited in staff, we are not for profit, so we do rely on our volunteers to help us out quite a bit.”

Individuals interested in volunteering need to fill out an application and attend an orientation meeting. The next orientation is October 14th from 4 pm to 5 pm.
