Ohio State Troopers are investigating the cause of a crash Thursday morning that claimed the life of a Newcomerstown woman.

A semi, driven by Dana Dowell of Houston, Texas, was traveling on 77 North, just after 11AM, followed by a car driven by 24 year-old Joanna Sellards.

New Philaelphia Post Trooper Christopher Demuth says Sellards may not have noticed the slower semi ahead of her.

“The semi was moving at a slower speed than the speed limit but not extremely slow, and was just struck in the back end by the Sellard’s vehicle.”

The car was initially lodged under the semi, but as Dowell pulled the truck to the side, it became free. Dowell was not injured in the crash.

Sellards was transported to Union Hospital by Tri-County EMS, then transferred to Akron Summa Health Center, where she died of her injuries.

At this time, Troopers believe there was not an assured cleared distance between Sellard’s car and the semi, but are investigating further.
