Loud Boom Heard Across Tuscarawas Valley

Mary Alice Reporting:

(Friday, September 14th) Officials report that a loud noise heard around Tuscarawas County was likely caused by military jets.

The County Sheriffs Office and Emergency Management Agency investigated numerous reports of individuals hearing a loud boom but were unable to pinpoint an exact location.

EMA officials believe this explosion type sound is most likely due to military jets moving around the state in response to Hurricane Florence.

They suspect the noise was probably a sonic boom that jets can create.

According to NASA, a sonic boom is a thunder-like noise that can be heard on the ground when an aircraft or other type of aerospace vehicle flies overhead faster than the speed of sound, or “supersonic.”

The EMA will continue to investigate.
