(New Philadelphia, Ohio) Local leaders continue to encourage the public to attend a meeting Thursday, April 20th that will focus on the local opiate epidemic.

New Philadelphia Mayor Joel Day explained the open discussion will feature guest speaker Ohio Attorney General Mike Dewine.

“To learn about the opiate addiction problem here in New Philadelphia and throughout Tuscarawas County and how we can participate in bringing it to an end.”

Day added the Tuscarawas County Health Department treats over 20 people a month in the Vivitrol program.

Vivitrol is a substitute for heroin, designed to wean addicts off the drug.

He explained that the community needs to come together to fight the deadly epidemic.

“There are people that have fallen victim to it. We all need to become aware of it and understand how we can end it and help these people who are addicted get clean and become productive citizens again.”

The event Thursday evening begins at 5:00 p.m. at Joseph Welty Middle School in New Philadelphia with the “Hidden in Plain Sight” display. The conversation with Dewine will follow at 6:00 p.m.
