(Tuesday, June 12th) New Philadelphia, Ohio – A 38-year-old man will spend several years in prison for stabbing a man in Dover.

Joshua Barron appeared Monday afternoon in court for his official sentencing after pleading no contest June 7th and reaching a deal with Tuscarawas County Prosecutors.

Assistant Prosecutor Mike Ernest explained that this is a serious crime and that the injuries the victim, Nick Hershberger, sustained could have been more severe.

“Nick is lucky really to be alive. If there is such a thing as good fortune in this, is that [the incident] wasn’t in an isolated spot and he had someone there who could get him to the hospital close by.”

At the hearing, Hershberger’s mother stated the eight years sentence was not enough considering her son now has a lifetime of medical concerns.

Barron expressed remorse for stabbing Hershberger.

“There is no reason for what happened. I didn’t know your son on a first name basis. I had oddly enough complimented him on his beard. From the paperwork, I read it was self-defense. I’m sick, I’m an alcoholic and I can’t help that. I am sorry. I’m sorry to my mother as well.”

Barron will serve eight years in prison and then will be under five years Post Release Control sanctions.
