Mary Alice Reporting – Chronic health concerns plague many Americans and a program is working to get at the cause.
The Unites States has the largest healthcare costs, yet the life expectance in the world ranks the US at 30th.
BUILD Health Challenge Executive Director Emily Yu explains the program looks at common health problems such as heart disease and diabetes.
“We go to the root cause and think about things like food insecurities, transportation, and other issues and figuring how we can improve sustainable interventions that will help communities.”
Through BUILD Health, the national program aims to support a partnership between community organizations to address specific issues occurring in that area.
“We’re really looking at how residents can take the lead and how residents can actually drive some of the solutions that are being implemented.”
She encourages anyone wanting to tackle healthcare issues or those with the growing problem can contact their local health department.
