Michele Spring Reporting:
(Thursday, July 05, 2018) New Philadelphia, Ohio – The Ohio State Highway Patrol will be focusing on commercial vehicle safety throughout the holiday weekend.
Lt. Mark Glennon with the New Philadelphia post said there are few tips motorists should follow when driving near a commercial vehicle.
“Any time you’re around a commercial vehicle, you have to understand that they can’t see you as well as you might think that they can. If you can’t see the driver in his side view mirror, that driver can’t see you either. So always give a commercial vehicle a good wide berth so you can get around them or they can get around you. And always make sure they know you’re going around them if you’re going to pass them.”
Glennon added that Commercial Enforcement Troopers will be out inspecting vehicles to make sure they are traveling legally.
The Great Lakes Initiative is a program that will target failure to yield, unsafe lane changes and following too close violations by other vehicles around large trucks.
OSP also encourages motorists to contact officials if they see anything of concern, especially distracted driving.
“We look for distracted driving with our commercial drivers. They have a bunch of stuff that is going on inside their vehicles but we want to make sure their focus is on the roadway and that they are operating safely.”
Glennon stressed that OSP is always focused on distracted driving no matter the vehicle.
According to statistics, in 2017, 45 percent of commercial vehicle-related crashes (25,565), were not the fault of the commercial vehicle.
