Charles William Kerns, 78, of Bolivar, died Wednesday December 7, 2011 at 12:25 AM in the home of his daughter Tenia (Garry) Sears of Bolivar after an extended illness.
Born March 10, 1933 in Dover he was a son of the late William and Louise (Hawk) Kerns and spent his early years in Stone Creek and worked as a dairy farmer with his father. He graduated in 1952 from Bolivar High School where he pole vaulted and played in the band. He also enjoyed hunting and spending time outdoors, working on his old cars and tractors and spending time with his family. He resided most of his life in Bolivar and owned and operated Charles Kerns Excavating in Bolivar until 2000.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church at Bolivar, the Bolivar Sportsman Club, Bolivar Vol. Fire Dept., a 40 year member of the Penn. Ohio Model A Club and the Tri-County Model A Club and a past member of the Land Improvement Contractors Assoc.
He was preceded in death by his first wife the former Beverly McCaulley on December 11, 1997.
Surviving are his wife the former Eleanor Viertel whom he married June 3, 2000; 3 daughters Tenia (Garry) Sears of Bolivar, Charlann (David) Young of Bolivar and Rita (Joseph) Smith of Melbourne, Florida; grandchildren Gabrielle (Ben) Rohr, Ashley (Eric) Shuman, Vaughn Sears all of Bolivar, Karissa (Andrew) Reeves of Cameron, N.C. and Anna Smith of Melbourne, Florida.; great grandchildren Kylie Rohr, Autumn Rohr and Jaxson Shuman all of Bolivar and several stepchildren and step grandchildren; a sister Joyclin (Robert) Ely of bolivar; brothers in law Richard (Peggy) McCaulley of Canton and John McCaulley of Massillon; sisters in law Eileen Liermann of North Canton, Patricia (Ralph) Carpinelli of Richfield, Teresa (James) Robb of Uhrichsville and Olga McCaulley of Canton and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and first wife he was preceded in death by 2 brothers-in-law August Liermann and Donald McCaulley.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday December 14, 2011 at 11:00 AM in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Bolivar. Rev. Michael E. Pozzuto will officiate and burial will follow in Fort Laurens Cemetery at Bolivar. Friends may call Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 5 to 8 PM at St. Paul Lutheran Church and 1 hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church at P.O. Box 377 Bolivar, Ohio 44612 or Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County at 201 W. 3rd St. Dover, Ohio 44622.
