Richard Eugene “Dick” Bair, 73, Port Washington, passed away late Wednesday night, December 28, in Union Hospital, Dover, following a lengthy struggle with cancer. Dick was born in Dover on April 28, 1938, a son of the late Clarence and Juanita Cooper Bair.
He was a heavy equipment operator with the former Empire Coal Company and the Valley Mining Company, both of Tuscarawas County, for 25 years before his retirement from Valley Mining in 2000. Dick was a member of the former Moose Lodge, New Philadelphia. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, working with his computer, and solving jig saw puzzles. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and his great granddaughter.
Dick is survived by his wife, Doris M. Firn Bair, Port Washington. Also surviving are two daughters, Carol and Betty, Philadelphia, PA, two step sons, James M. and wife Cathy Decker, Philadelphia, and Michael J. and wife Lisa (Morrison) Decker, Port Washington, and a step daughter, Doris and husband David Bratschell, Philadelphia. Dick also leaves 12 step grandchildren and several step great grandchildren, including step granddaughters Amber Decker and Ashley Decker, and step great granddaughter Alexa Schuler, all of Port Washington, a sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Margo, a step brother, Gene and wife Charlene Baker, Zoarville, a half sister, Kathy Jo McConnell, New Philadelphia, and several nieces and nephews.
To honor Dick’s requests, his remains are to be cremated. No visiting hours will be observed. Grave side services and burial will be held at the Salem-Union Cemetery, Port Washington, later in 2012 at the convenience of his family. The family is suggesting that memorials be made in Dick’s name to the Community Hospice of Tuscarawas, Carroll, and Stark Counties, 201 West Third Street, Dover, OH 44622. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The Ourant Funeral Home is assisting the family with all arrangements.
