Charcoal Grill Sparks Fire at Apartment Complex

Officials with the New Philadelphia Fire Department say they’ve determined the cause of an early Saturday morning fire.

Firefighters received a call at 2:02 Saturday morning for a fire at a three-unit apartment complex, located at 837 2nd Street SE in New Philadelphia. Once on scene, firefighters noticed heavy fire coming from the roof of the complex.

Officials say crews rescued two individuals from the basement of one of the units with one other individual evacuating themselves from a separate unit.

It is believed the fire originated with a charcoal grill on a wooden deck at the back of one of the apartments, eventually spreading to the complex.

Officials say they currently estimate damages at approximately $200,000.

Crews were assisted by the Dover Fire Department, Warwick Township Fire Department and Smith Ambulance at the scene, while York Township Fire Department manned New Philadelphia’s station during the incident.
