The Dover Fire Department is encouraging everyone to use common sense this 4th of July. Fire Chief Russ Volkert says he strongly recommends that fireworks be used by professionals. According to the National Council on Fireworks Safety, sparklers, trick noisemakers and novelties are exempt under Ohio law. Other consumer fireworks may be sold to Ohio residents upon execution of a form agreeing to take the items out of the state within 48 hours. Volkert says, however, some state residents do not abide by the law. Volkert says there are thousands of fireworks related injuries reported every year across the United States. Volkert says due to abnormally dry conditions it’s important to be cautious of starting a quick spreading fire. Again, Volkert says the safest way to prevent fireworks related injuries is to leave fireworks displays to trained professionals.
