Fire Departments Seeking Grant for Training Devices
Nathan Cozart Reporting
Four local fire departments are seeking grant dollars to help bring realistic training equipment to the area.
Dover Fire Chief Russ Volkert says his department is acting as the lead agency for Dover, New Philadelphia, Sugarcreek, and Bolivar fire departments in applying for the grant.
Volkert says the training tower the departments are looking to purchase would be a mobile unit.
Volkert says the training tower would house a number of features.
Volkert notes that the training maze has the ability to emulate scenarios that are the next most realistic situations short of an actual fire.
Volkert says that both pieces of equipment are resources that are lacking in the area, with the nearest training centers housed in Apple Creek and at Stark State College in North Canton.
He adds that the financial figures for the grant have already been laid out.
Volkert says the equipment provides training that is less prevalent across Ohio.
The deadline to apply for the grant is this Friday, July 6th. Volkert says officials are working with a grant writing firm to assist with the process.
