Italian-American Festival Kicks Off Friday

Everyone’s Italian for the weekend at the 24th annual Italian-American Festival in downtown Dover.

Spokesman Michael Alesiano says this year’s event features plenty of contests, good food and musical entertainment.

Alesiano says new to the festival this year is a wedding that will take place tonight (Friday).

Also on tap today (Friday) is the annual plate auction.  Alesiano says this year’s plate features the 1962 St. Mary’s Blue Waves Class A State Champion football team.

He says the small and inexperienced team managed to do great things that year.

Honorary hostesses for the festival are Dolly Contini and Joanne Mathias of Dover.  Alesiano says these two women both exemplify what it means to be Italian.

The purpose of the Italian-American festival is to promote and preserve Italian heritage and Alesiano says also to establish scholarships for the students of Tuscarawas County.

The Italian-American Festival runs Friday through Sunday.
