Senator Calls for Preservation of Historic Village
Jennifer Lourenco Reporting
U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown is introducing legislation to protect the Village of Zoar.
Brown says the bill would require the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to preserve the historic integrity of the village as the Corps studies ways to manage the town’s aging levee.
Brown says he’s heard from dozens of Ohioans who want the village to be preserved.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is in the midst of a three-year study to assess the levee’s future.
One of many alternatives under consideration is removing it entirely, which could require the relocation or demolition of 80 percent of the historic village.
Brown says his bill would prevent this by requiring the Corps to find a solution that maintains the historic significance of the village.
