City Seeks Grant Funding For Demo Work

The city of New Philadelphia is working to secure grant funding for the demolition of dilapidated or abandoned properties.

Service Director Jim Zucal says council is considering a resolution that would authorize the administration to apply for Moving Ohio Forward funds.

The funds are part of an agreement reached between Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and five of the nation’s largest mortgage servicers over foreclosure abuses, fraud and unfair and deceptive mortgage practices and can only be used to tear down blighted or abandoned properties.

Zucal says the city has identified a half-dozen properties for possible demolition.

Zucal says the properties are located throughout the city.

Zucal says he hopes the commercial properties that were on the list initially can be used to create new businesses and new jobs.

Zucal says he thinks the Moving Ohio Forward grant program will benefit to the city.

Tuscarawas County has been allocated $359,207.  The Ohio Regional Development Corporation in Coshocton has been tapped to oversee the program and distribute funds on behalf of the county.
