A 1943 graduate of Dennison High School, Phyllis furthered her education at Akron Business College and was employed by United Bank in Uhrichsville for several years prior to her marriage. On January 12, 1951, she wed David J. “Jake” Maxwell with whom she was blessed to spend over sixty-one years of loving marriage. From that time on, she devoted herself to the care of her husband, family and home. A lifelong resident of the Twin City area, she was a faithful member of 1st Moravian Church of Uhrichsville where she was a Sunday School teacher for many, many years, sang in the choir throughout her adult life, and was active in the Moravian Women. She will be fondly remembered as the “pie lady” at the church’s benefit dinners. In her spare time, she enjoyed doing needlework, especially crocheting and counted cross-stitch. She also loved to read.
She is survived by her husband, Jake; daughters, Linda L. Miller of Dennison and Carolyn Davis of Uhrichsville; grandchildren, David, Sarah and Michael Miller; sister, Emma Lou Risley of the Tappan Lake area; sister-in-law, Anna Marie Abel of Uhrichsville; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Gary Lee Maxwell, and a sister, Alma Jean McCue.
Services and visitation for Phyllis will be in her church home at 1st Moravian Church of Uhrichsville, as was her wish. Family and friends are invited to call at the church on Monday, September 10, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and the Rev. William E. Surber will officiate her funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 11 in the church. Interment will follow in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery. Those wishing to honor her memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to 1st Moravian Church of Uhrichsville, 315 N. Water St., Uhrichsville, OH 44683. Phyllis’ family wishes to extend their deep and sincere gratitude to Community Hospice for the exceptional and personal care given to Phyllis during her final illness, as she was always cheered and comforted by their visits.
