Charles D. “Chuck” Stephens, 90, formerly of Bolivar, passed away Tuesday September 18, 2012 at 5:45 AM in Canton Regency Retirement Center at Canton. Born February 26, 1922 in East Sparta he was a son of the late Thomas John and Bessie Mae (Truax) Stephens.
He was a 1940 graduate of the former East Sparta High School, attended Tri-State College of Angola, Indiana and was a WW II United States Naval Aviator Veteran. He served as a pilot in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945 then joined the United States Naval Reserves. He was the owner of various car dealerships in Bolivar and Brightwood Motors in New Philadelphia. He was called to active duty for the U.S. Navy during the Cuban Missle Crisis in 1962. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserves until 1967 when he retired as Lieutenant Commander United States Naval Reserves. He was a life member of the Bolivar American Legion Post #190, a member of the Bolivar Masonic Lodge “Caldwell” #330, a member of 32nd degree Scottish Rites Valley of Canton, a member of the Bolivar Coffee Club and attended the Church of the Holy Trinity at Zoar.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years Phyllis A. (Sluss) Stephens whom he married April 21, 1946. Also surviving are a daughter Kathy Fuhrman of Tallahassee, Fla., a son Mark A. (Cheryl) Stephens of Rittman, a daughter Cindy A. (Dave) Miller of Canton; three Grandsons Adam Fuhrman, Brian Fuhrman and Thomas Stephens; two granddaughters Jennifer Stephens and Julia Miller and a great granddaughter Olivia Fuhrman.
Funeral services will be held Friday September 21, 2012 at 11:00 AM in the Lebold-Smith Funeral Home at 248 Park Ave. Bolivar, Ohio. Fr. Ron Aubry will officiate and burial will follow in St. Stephen Cemetery at Bolivar. Friends may call Friday from 10:00 AM until time of services at the funeral home.
