Corps Announces Study Delay

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is continuing to keep the public up to date in regards to the status of the Zoar Levee and Diversion Dam Safety Modification Study.

Project Manager Rodney Cremeans says the Corps is behind schedule on completing the Baseline Risk Assessment which he says will cause a delay to completion of the overall study.

Cremeans says the Corps will continue to implement risk reduction measures as time and funding permits.

Lead Study Planner Aaron Smith says the actual delay has occurred in obtaining the baseline risk estimate.

Smith says even though the estimate has been delayed other aspects of the study are moving forward as planned.

Smith says yet another draft report, the historic baseline property study, is being completed to help the Corps understand the historic sites that could be at risk either from a levee failure or from any remedial action that is taken.

Overall, Smith says the study is progressing well.

As a result of the Water Resources Development Act of 2007, the Corps conducting the Dam Safety Modification Study in hopes of identifying and recommending a management plan for the Zoar Levee and Diversion Dam that will provide the most effective reduction of risk to the public.

Cremeans says the goal of the study is to find the best plan to mitigate significant effects to village residents and historic properties.
