School Bus Safety in the Spotlight This Week

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is participating in National School Bus Safety Week.

The theme for this year’s Bus Safety Week is "I See The Driver; The Driver Sees Me".  Lt. Eric Escola, Commander of the New Philadelphia Patrol Post, says the patrol is making sure that drivers are following traffic laws when near a school bus.

Escola says that part of their school bus surveillance involves having some patrol officers ride on the bus.

Escola says there will be patrol cars following some school buses, too.

Ohio law requires motorists approaching from either direction of a stopped school bus to stop at least ten feet from a bus loading or unloading passengers. If a school bus is stopped on a road divided into four or more lanes, only traffic driving in the same direction as the bus must stop.

National School Bus Safety Week runs through Friday, October 26th.
