Highway Patrol Cautions Drivers to be especially Alert

The Ohio State Highway Patrol will have extra cruisers on the roadway for the long Thanksgiving holiday.

New Philadelphia Post Commander Lt. Eric Escola says his officers will be working overtime to help keep the highways safe.

Because the Thanksgiving holiday is one of the busiest travel times of the year, Escola says it’s also the time of year when many crashes occur.

Escola cautions motorists to buckle up and drive no faster than the posted speed limit.

And for the holiday season, Escola says the highway patrol has partnered with Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) in an effort called “Tie One On For Safety”, also known as the Red Ribbon campaign.

The highway patrol reports that 17 people were killed statewide in 2011 during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend with 30 percent related to impaired driving.
