Senators Urge Fast Action to Avoid “Fiscal Cliff”

Ohio’s U.S Senators say going over the so-called “fiscal cliff” is not a good idea.

The “fiscal cliff” refers to a series of tax increases and spending cuts slated to kick in January 1st unless Congress acts.

Republican Rob Portman says he sees tax reforms, not letting taxes go up, as the way to ease the nation’s fiscal crunch.

Democrat Sherrod Brown says he thinks the wealthiest Americans should pay more in taxes.

President Obama’s fiscal cliff plan calls for new stimulus spending as well as stripping Congress’ authority to increase the debt limit, among other things.

Portman says he’s sending the president a letter signed by 44 U.S Senators outlining why Obama’s plan is a mistake.

Portman says this fiscal cliff uncertainty is hurting the economy.

Brown says he agrees.

The president, meanwhile, continues to push his plan to the American people all while trying keep up pressure on Republicans to act before the end of the year.
