Johnson made the announcement at Monday night’s council meeting.
Johnson, who has a year left on his term, says now is the right time for him to step down.
Johnson says he wasn’t looking to get into public service all those years ago.
Johnson says he’s enjoyed serving the public in various capacities over the years.
Johnson says he plans to continue working at the Tuscarawas County Board of Elections Office after retiring as city treasurer.
New Philadelphia Democratic Central Committee members are responsible for appointing Johnson’s replacement.
