Fete Advocates for Pay Raise Policy Change

New Philadelphia's law director is suggesting a change in how council issues pay raises to the city's elected officials.

At their most recent meeting, council members approved an amended resolution that grants three-percent pay increases to select elected officials retroactive to January 1, 2012. The measure was approved by a five to two vote despite “no” votes from both Councilwoman Sandy Cox and Councilwoman Winnie Walker.

But Marvin Fete says, while granting in-term raises is legal and has been the city's policy for at least nearly thirty years, the approach is not good public policy.

Fete says he is advocating that council do away with granting in-term pay raises and instead establish a committee that examines salaries of elected officials and possibly sets them more in line with those of similar municipalities.

Fete says the possible new approach could be a way to both encourage the best people to run for office and also retain office holders as well.
