The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents of a couple scams that have been circulating in the area.
Detective Captain Orvis Campbell says one common scam that has continued to gain popularity is what deputies call the “grandparent scam”.
Campbell says what concerns him is the amount of personal information these scammers are able to obtain from social networking sites.
Campbell says another scam that has been successful lately is email solicitations for investments into what appears to be legitimate companies.
Campbell says these scams are extremely difficult to investigate as the money typically goes over seas.
Campbell says people need to keep in mind the old adage, “if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is”.
Campbell also offers the following tips: Stop and think before you wire or send any money, never give out personal information over the telephone unless you initiated the transaction, and report to the police any crime, attempted crime, suspicious person or activity.
