According to New Philadelphia police, 40-year-old John Barnish and his mother Edythe, age 70, were robbed at their residence on the 100 block of 4th Street NE.
Police say John Barnish was working on his computer at approximately 5:00am Wednesday when he heard a noise in his basement and went downstairs to investigate.
When he got there, the police report says Barnish smelled a strong odor of cologne and discovered two men, each wearing a mask, who then took him to his mother’s bedroom, where the intruders tied both of them up and held them at gunpoint.
Police say the robbers then stole some items from their home and drove away in Edythe Barnish’s maroon Ford Taurus.
After the intruders left, John Barnish freed himself and called police, who arrived at the Barnish home around 6:15am.
And early Thursday morning, two men wearing masks broke into the home of 87-year-old Beech Lane resident Margaret Zimmerman. Police say the intruders tied Zimmerman up and ransacked the house.
The two men left and she was able to eventually free herself and go to a neighbor’s house. The neighbor called 911, who alerted New Philadelphia police to the burglary around 3:30am.
The police department says these cases have been turned over to the detective bureau for investigation.
