About 18 people attended a public hearing on Bolivar’s petition to annex County Road 102 from the village’s corporation limit to the Lawrence Township Industrial Park driveway.
Ohio and Erie Canalway Trail spokesman Dick Lebold says the village wants to make it safer for people to use the trail that runs along and even crosses the roadway by lowering the speed limit from 55 mph to 25 mph.
Lawrence Township Trustee Don Ackerman says the trustees oppose the request.
Bolivar councilman Dante Mariani says safety is the only reason for the annexation as the road would not be an asset to the village.
Carmel Haueter travels that section of roadway frequently and she says she hasn’t noticed a speed problem.
Dee Grossman, Director of the Tuscarawas County Convention and Visitors Bureau, offered a compromise should the commissioners vote no on the annexation.
The commissioners have until February 16th to approve or deny Bolivar’s request.
