He was born on July 4, 1938 in Zanesville.
John was a graduate of Washington High School and worked at Crown Cork & Seal until his retirement in 2000.
He was an avid gardener and sportsman, enjoying fishing, hunting, golfing and bowling. John also enjoyed music and could play several instruments and was a member of a couple of bands in his youth.
He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia (Don) Hickman of Massillon, two grandchildren, Johnny (Crystal) Hickman and Donny (Katie) Hickman, three great-grandchildren, a brother Jerry (Sharon) Vales of Palm Bay, FL, his ex-wife, Sherry Nickels and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Adelaide Bone Vales and his sister, Judy Brncik.
Friends may gather at the Paquelet Funeral Home from 6:00PM-8:00PM on Friday, March 8, 2013. A memorial service will follow at 8:00PM Friday.
