-Boys’ Basketball: Hop on with us Tuesday night on WTUZ for Division III district semi-final basketball as Garaway plays Martins Ferry at New Philadelphia High School. The Pirates enter the game at 16-5, having defeated Tusky Valley last Thursday for the sectional title at Claymont. The Purple Riders, no strangers to Garaway, pulled out a 3 point win over Ft. Frye to capture the sectional crown and move to Tuesday’s encounter. Pirates Coach Dave Shutt said that the Riders rely on their 2 big men for the bulk of their scoring, so a point of focus for the defense will be to deny a lot of interior chances. Of course, the Pirates also have 6-8 junior Paul Honigford who can discourage or alter quite a few inside shots. Honigford is one of the offensive weapons for Garaway, but they are better when the ball is being distributed. Jake Troyer, Brennan Mullet and Hunter Shaw are all capable scorers. It’s the first of a doubleheader at New Philadelphia on Tuesday, so air time will be at 5:45 and tip-off at 6:00 on line and on 99.9FM.
Also on Tuesday, Malvern is in action at Meadowbrook in the Div. IV district. The Hornets will face Zanesville Rosecrans in the Tuesday game and Hiland plays Shadyside Wednesday night.
Tickets for Hiland boys and girls games are on sale through the respective game days, and Dover has tickets on sale Tuesday 8-6 and Wednesday 8-noon for their Wednesday night encounter with Zanesville in the district title game at Coshocton.
With both teams eliminated from the tournament, Claymont and Cambridge played an East Central Ohio League make up game Monday night. The contest went to overtime before the home standing Mustangs won it 67-63. Daniel Wise scored 29 points in his last game for the Mustangs and Aaron Cox put in 16. Claymont ends the season with a 15-8 record.
-All-PAC: Basketball honors have been announced by the Principals’ Athletic Conference. The girls’ Coach of the Year and Player of the Year both wear the red & black of Tusky Valley, with Matt Ward and Sara Tucke being so voted. Paige Ricketts and Shannon Watson joined Tucke on the first team, as well as Danielle Wilmoth of Fairless and Indian Valley’s Taryn Deets.
Timken took the special awards in the boys’ categories. First team members include Clay Shetler of Tusky Valley; Tanner Eckstein from Indian Valley and Fairless’ Austin Matheson.
