Tornadoes Fall Short; Hawks & Lady Pirates Also Out

-Boys’ Basketball: Just one more scorer…or one more big body. That’s where Dover was short when they lost 45-40 to Zanesville in Wednesday’s Div. II district championship game at Coshocton. The Tornadoes’ defense was excellent, forcing the Blue Devils to be patient. Zanesville’s 14-point second quarter was their largest offensively. Meanwhile, Dover’s offense relied heavily on junior Anthony Monaco. He took well over half of the Tornadoes’ attempts and ended with a game high 28 points. But the rest of the Tornadoes could not get effectively involved on the offensive and in a glaring stat, did not register even one offensive rebound for the entire game. Down by as many as 9 in the last period, the Tornadoes made one last run at the Blue Devils, but ran out of time. The loss ends the year for Coach Bob VonKaenel and the Tornadoes at 20-3, while Zanesville advances to the regional tournament next week in Athens. Monaco, who also grabbed a rebound, was named TUZ-MVP.
In a shocking end at Meadowbrook High School, Hiland fell to Shadyside 55-50 in a Div. IV district semi-final. The Hawks were on fire in the first half and lead 40-22 at the break. At that point, the wheels came completely off. Forced into 5 turnovers and missing all 9 of their shots in the third period, Hiland was outscored by the undefeated Tigers 18-0 in the frame. The game was last tied at 50, with Shadyside scoring the final points of the game to advance to the district final.
-Girls’ Basketball: Offensively, there wasn’t a lot going on in the Div. III regional semi-final opener between Garaway and Ironton at the OU Convocation Center on Wednesday night. Very, very little. Similar in nature, each team relies on a smothering defense and patient offense to subdue opponents. On this night, the Tigers were a little better at each. After a 3-pointer by the Pirates in the first quarter (which ended 5-5), Ironton did not allow another point to the Lady Pirates for over 15 minutes! Still, the Pirates’ own defense allowed them to be within striking distance at 16-21 at the end of the third quarter. But forcing 3 turnovers in the early stages of the 4th quarter and capitalizing on free throws, the Tigers ended Garaway’s season 31-24. Sarah Bardall led Garaway scorers with 10 points, 8 of which came at the charity stripe as the Lady Pirates made just 6 of 20 shots from the field in the entire game. Coach Scott Bardall’s team bows out of the tournament at 18-7.
-IVC All-Stars: Winter sports honors have been announced by the Inter-Valley Conference. In wrestling, the following boys won weight class championships: Luke Lehmiller (103), Sandy Valley; Eric Cassidy (112), Sandy Valley; Tyler Snyder (119), Garaway; Brian Beckett (125), Newcomerstown; Tristan Gerber(130), Garaway; Dutch Kirkman (135), Sandy Valley; Billy Natale (140), Sandy Valley; Marcus Mardis (145), Newcomerstown; Zak Monte (152), Sandy Valley; Nate Anderson (160), Ridgewood; Jake Conrad (171), Ridgewood; Eric Schie (189), Garaway; Bryan Adams (215), Tusc.
