Mary Alice Reporting:

(Tuesday, November 27th) New Philadelphia, Ohio – New Philadelphia City Council has passed an ordinance that will regulate property maintenance.

After previously hearing citizen concerns, on Monday, council members adopted the International Property Maintenance Code in an effort to clean up the city.

New Philadelphia Fire Chief Jim Parrish explains that the reasoning for the legislation relates to dilapidated residential and business properties.

“This is a problem that’s not going away. We need to react to it or just be satisfied with what we see, and the majority of the council decided to act upon it. This just gives us the ability to deal with those that are not willing to clean up their properties and a standard to go by.”

Parrish says the administration has discussed the safety issue of piled items since 2016 and has been an advocate for the code since the fire department’s purpose is to protect community residents.

Previously, Law Director Marvin Fete pointed out that while the code covers broad maintenance, citations would be issued as a last resort.
