Mary Alice Reporting: (Warren Township, Ohio) A third raccoon in Tuscarawas County has tested positive for the rabies virus after attacking a homeowners pet.
The Tuscarawas County Health Department was reported of the positive testing from the raccoon collected in Warren Township.
Environmental Health Director Caroline Terakedis explains that this is the third positive rabies case for the county.
“It is unusually for Tuscarawas County to have any raccoon’s test positive for rabies. It’s kind of an unusual event. It kind of started last year in Stark County and then this year, Tuscarawas County has had some raccoons, as well as Carroll County, and the City of New Philadelphia has also had several bats test positive for rabies.”
She adds that the dog involved in the altercation had been vaccinated, which is recommended for all pets.
Earlier this year, the United State Department of Agriculture dropped rabies vaccination packets in portions of Tuscarawas and Stark counties.
