Nick McWilliams reporting – The name of the street where a Vietnam veteran lived as a youth could soon see a different name.
James Thaddeus Conway, who was a Specialist 6 for the United States Army, served in the 1st Calvary Division, 15th Medical Battalion while stationed overseas.
According to fellow Vietnam veteran, George Haskins, Conway died following a helicopter crash, but should be remembered for his attempts to help members of the crew on board after the incident.
“The chopper went down, and when the rescue party approached, someone shouted. He looked up [and] dropped. He was pulling bodies out of the chopper at the time. He grew up on the corner of 4th [Street] and North Romig.”
Haskins presented the idea of the street renaming to council, who took the suggestion into committee for consideration.
Conway is buried in Union Cemetery in Uhrichsville, and has his name on the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington D.C.
