Mary Alice Reporting – Even though it’s months away, representatives encourage local citizens to start thinking of items to pack in a shoebox.

The Operation Christmas Child collection is the third full week of November and when out shopping, residents are asked to buy something for this donation event.

Regional Strategist Ester Troyer says a great time to purchase items, especially craft and activity materials, is over Ohio’s tax free weekend, which is Friday and Saturday.

“Now is the time to start packing because whenever you see something on sale that would be great to put in a shoebox, now is the time to get it.”

The boxes can be for boys or girls, ages 2 to 14, and include personal care items, clothing, or toys.

“Things that we just think are ordinary, to them are just so special. One thing that children love is sunglasses. They didn’t know how to use yoyo’s but the loved it when we showed them how.”

Some items are not acceptable and Troyer encourages interested individuals to go online to www.samaritanspurse.org to find out more information about the giving effort.
